Social Connector

Reports to: Board of Directors
Base/Department: Somerset

Main purpose of role:

Loveable works across Somerset supporting people with learning disabilities and/or autism to accesss social events and have friends in integrated settings within the community. We are a social enterprise that puts people at the centre of everything we do and we value everyone’s unique contribution. The social connector is a super fun role that will be vital to Loveables community. You will enable our members attend and connect with likeminded people in a safe
environment within their own communities. These will be venues such as pubs, clubs, music venues, activities and community spaces. The post holder will need to work confidently in a social setting with the people we support and be able to problem solve and communicate effectively. You will be required to travel and worklexibly to meet the needs of the people we support. Having a sense of fun and adventure is important to this role! You will be part of a team that meets regularly and will have support from volunteers, staff and directors,training, and resources.

Main tasks/overview of responsibilities:

  • Attend a monthly social, party or experience -meet and greet attendee’s and make everyone feel welcome and valued. Get involved with the event by chatting to members and support workers, helping to mingle. 
  • Help to form and maintain strong friendships and peer to peer support networks for all individuals.
  • Encourage people to sign up for membership. Give information and show people the website. 
  • Get involved, encourage others to do so too. It’s all about having fun.Talk about memberships, ensure everyone has an active membership or is working towards it.
  • Help to set up dates and chaperone dates when needed.

  • You’re a role model for others and are kind and patient. 
  • Support people to become empowered and articulate what they want to do socially.
  • You listen to the people we support and demonstrate an understanding of what they are communicating.
  • You present a positive image of people with learning disabilities.
  • You are fun, have a sense of humour and do not take yourself too seriously!
  • You have a good awareness and understanding of safeguarding and be able to do our in house safeguarding training. 

Communication:

  • You can identify problems and know when to ask for support or help.
  • You can communicate clearly, both orally and in writing adapting what you say and how you say it so that each person can understand you.
  • You are patient with learning disabled and neurodivergant people and understand the varying levels of communication and understanding in our community. 
  • You exercise confidentiality and best practice when dealing with vulnerable adults – for example, with financial and personal details.
  • You can communicate in a professional and honest manner with support staff and parents / carers. 

Equality and Diversity:

  • Understand individual needs, taking into consideration gender, sexual orientation, cultural and religious requirements.
  • Act in accordance with the policy and procedures.

 

Health and Safety:

  • To maintain health, safety and security of self and others in the venues.
  • Ensure that all work is carried out in line with our policies and procedures.
  • Attend induction and update mandatory training when necessary.

Membership:

  • To actively promote the opportunity to join the membership.
  • To assist people in completing membership registration forms.
  • To ensure that completed membership registration forms are submitted correctly.
  • To inform the membership department of any outstanding queries regarding membership which need to be resolved.

You will have the opportunity to gain experience in supporting learning disabled and autistic people so they can meet in a supportive, fun and encouraging environment. Your input could make a difference to people’s lives, so you may have the satisfaction of seeing individuals feel mutually supported and more confident. This role could also provide you with greater experience if you are looking into developing professionally within the voluntary sector or community work. You will have the opportunity to be an integral part of a team of staff and other volunteers, to support people. Aside from the mandatory courses, there will be opportunities for on-going training and personal development.

Why we want you!

Our events have been created to
respond to the needs of our community who do not have a specific outlet to meet and socialise or share particular issues that may be affecting their lives. Our aim is to create a safe space within our community, so we are looking for volunteers to help support and develop this project.

Due to our commitment to continuous improvement, it is likely that the post will evolve over time. These duties will be subject to review, any amendments will be made in consultation and agreement with the post holder.
